An afternoon of soldering

When your pickguard costs more than some people’s guitars that can only mean one thing, Bare Knuckle Pickups! This is a Mother’s Milk set, based on early-60s strat pickups, woody but snappy. As the name suggests they’re modeled after John Frusciante’s tone, and he favours 1962 stratocasters. Although I believe he replaced the original pickups and now uses Seymour Duncan SSL1s, which are based on the formvar wired 50s units.

Guitar pickups

There is something very satisfying about doing a neat vintage style wiring job, it makes no real difference as long as the solder joins are solid, but I’d feel more confident using a guitar wired like this than one that looks like a kitten playing with a bunch of string.
